The Randolph County Sheriff's Department is investigating a shooting that injured a convenience store worker.

It happened Friday night at the Rich Oil Gas Station in Elkins.

Sheriff Mark Brady said a bullet grazed the head of the cashier, Shaun Townsend, 36, and that shattered glass and bullet fragments injured his face and caused him to lose vision in one of his eyes.

Townsend was released from the hospital Sunday.

The gunman fled on foot. The sheriff's department is looking for a white man, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 9 inches, 135 to 150 pounds.

He was wearing dark pants and a dark hooded jacket.

"Anyone who will fire several rounds at an individual attempting to injure them or kill them is very dangerous, and menace to this society and the community we ask all the business owners, and all residents pay attention to their surroundings be vigilant," Sheriff Brady said.

The authorities are following up on leads and reviewing surveillance tape. 

Brady said it's unclear if there was a robbery.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Department identified the victim as Shawn Townsend of Elkins.

Sheriff Mark Brady said Townsend suffered wounds from shattered glass and bullet fragments.  He was not directly hit by any bullets.

Townsend was released from the hospital on Sunday.

Police are still trying to figure out who is responsible for the shooting and where he may be.

Authorities in Randolph County responded to the scene of a shooting in Elkins on Friday night.

Randolph County Sheriff Mark Brady said first responders were alerted of "shots fired" at the Rich Oil gas station, along the five-lane in Elkins, around 11:20 p.m.

Once authorities arrived on scene, they discovered the cashier had apparent facial injuries, according to Brady.

Investigators could not yet determine if the cashier received wounds from the gunman that fired from outside shattering the glass window, a bullet, or if bullet fragments hit him, according to Brady. Brady said its unclear if a robbery took place.

The cashier was initially taken to Davis Memorial Hospital but has since been transferred to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. His condition is unknown, but Brady said he was conscious before he went to the hospital.

Authorities are looking for the gunman, who fled the scene on foot, according to Brady. He is described as a white man, 5'6" to 5'9", and 135 to 150 lbs. He was wearing dark pants and a dark jacket with a hood.

The sheriff's department used its mobile command unit in its search, along with a crime scene response vehicle from the West Virginia State Police.

Elkins police also responded to the shooting.
